Solve Your Small-Space Storage Dilemmas

TIPS FOR MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR STORAGE SPACE NO MATTER YOUR HOME’S SIZE

If you live in a tiny apartment or you share your space with others, you’ve probably figured out that the space you have is something to be cherished, not taken for granted. Storage space might be hard to come by, but there’s an organizational and storage hack for everything, so keep reading to find out how to make the most of your storage space no matter the size of your humble abode.

OFFSEASON CLOTHING

If you’re in the habit of packing away your winter wardrobe to make room for your summer attire (and vice versa), make use of the space underneath your bed by storing these items in plastic bins. Your bed isn’t high enough to accommodate such bins? No problem! Put it up on risers. Just a couple inches in height can be enough to make room for a few plastic bins.

EXTRA PILLOWS AND BLANKETS

It’s nice to have extra linens when overnight guests come, but in between those times, storing extra pillows and blankets can be a pain. To minimize the amount of space extra linens take up, use vacuum storage bags. Place them inside and use your vacuum to suck out the air and compress them down flat as a pancake.

SHOES

So, you’ve got yourself a growing shoe collection and it takes up a lot of room in your closet? Go back to your college dorm days and get yourself an over-the-door shoe caddy. This storage hack is ideal because it holds up to a dozen pairs of shoes as well as a host of other things like scarves, hats, and chunky jewelry.

A BIKE

If you live in a small apartment that doesn’t have a garage or patio, storing a bicycle can be one of the hardest things to do. If you’re the riding type, try hanging your bike on the wall like a piece of artwork. Secure two wooden dowels or metal hooks to the studs behind the wall and hang your bike by its horizontal bars for an easy access, artsy-looking display.

EXERCISE BALL

Exercise balls are great for strength training, but they take up a lot of room when not in use. If deflating the ball after each use isn’t an option, try repurposing it as a chair when you’re not using it for exercise. If you don’t want to do this, go the same route as the bike and secure two dowels on the wall to place the ball on when you’re done using it.

KEEPSAKES AND HOLIDAY DÉCOR

For things you only use periodically or want to keep for sentimental reasons, there’s usually a wealth of unused wall space above and behind hanging clothing in the closet. Securing shelves in these locations may require a step stool to reach, but if you only need the items once or twice a year, you won’t mind.
