Quiet, surrounded by beautiful parks, and teeming with amenities, Royal Oak is a fantastic neighbourhood for families looking to be just outside the core of Victoria with easy access to both the Saanich peninsula and downtown.

Where is Royal Oak

Royal Oak is located just north of downtown Victoria along the Patricia Bay Highway near exit 11. It is part of the large District of Saanich, and is bordered by Judah Street to the south and Elk/Beaver Lake to the north.

Proud Historic Neighbourhood

Royal Oak was used as farmland from as early as the 1860s, and was incorporated as a part of the District of Saanich in 1906. While most of Royal Oak is now modern suburban housing, its historical roots are still evident thanks to the efforts of the Royal Oak Historical Association.

Most notably, Royal Oak is home to the Royal Oak Community Hall, built in 1911 and still used for community association events today. Royal Oak also hosts the Royal Oak Schoolhouse, opened in 1885, which has recently been converted to house a charming local bakery.

A mix of history and modernity, people love Royal Oak for this unique combination of pastoral history and convenient shopping.

Living in Royal Oak

Royal Oak is a neighbourhood of balance, built on the edge of rural farmlands with easy access to amenities and nearby downtown Victoria. The streets of Royal Oak are true to their name, lined with vast oak trees that provide ample shade and a subdued, quiet presence.

Highlighting this connection to nature, Royal Oak is hub of recreation. It is the home of many beautiful parks, including Quick’s Bottom Park and Colquitz Park.

Royal Oak also borders on the popular Elk/Beaver Lake, a great spot for swimming, boating, and running. For a shorter walking trail, residents of Royal Oak also border on Rithet’s Bog, home to a 3 kilometre walking trail around the nature conservation area, located directly behind the convenient Broadmead Village Shopping Centre.

Promoting all types of active lifestyles and recreation, Royal Oak is also home to the fabulous Saanich Commonwealth Place, originally built for the 1994 Summer Commonwealth Games. This public recreation centre features a series of different swimming pools, a fully equipped weight room, a full size gymnasium, and the Bruce Hutchison Branch of the Greater Victoria Public Library, all in one convenient, accessible location!

Schools in Royal Oak

Royal Oak lies within School District 63 Saanich. Children living in Royal Oak are conveniently located near Lochside Elementary, Royal Oak Middle School, and Claremont Secondary. Offering diverse programs like the Focus on Fine Arts program and the Claremont Sports Institute, Claremont Secondary is a popular high school choice in Victoria.

Getting Around

Despite its location outside of downtown Victoria, Royal Oak is very easily accessible. Just a quick drive down the Patricia Bay Highway, Royal Oak is only 15 minutes by car from the heart of downtown.

With the newly improved Royal Oak Bus Exchange, public transit access downtown or up the peninsula to the Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal has never been easier! Several different routes take residents downtown in under 30 minutes, and a bus trip up to the ferry terminal takes just over a half hour.

Bordered by the beautiful Lochside Trail, an isolated biking and walking trail that stretches from downtown Victoria to the Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal, Royal Oak is also easily accessible by bicycle.

A beautiful neighbourhood just outside the bustling downtown core, but still secluded and surrounded by parks, Royal Oak is a wonderful and growing Victoria neighbourhood.

Shopping in Royal Oak

The bustling Broadmead Village shopping centre is conveniently located within Royal Oak, and his home to several local restaurants and boutiques as well as a Thrifty’s grocery store.

Just steps away from the local middle school, the Royal Oak Shopping Centre is another outdoor mall in the area that features a Country Grocer and a Shopper’s Drug Mart.

While all of life’s necessities are located right within Royal Oak itself, the vibrant shopping of downtown Victoria is also just a quick trip away by bike, bus or car.
