4 Simple Tips to Maximize Your Home Storage Space

TIPS TO HELP YOU MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR HOME’S STORAGE SPACE

We’re willing to bet that every once in a while, you look around your home and think to yourself, “Man, I should really get rid of some of this stuff.” Then, you don’t because it’s just too hard to let go of so many memories.

On the other hand, maybe you’re just a procrastinator. That’s okay, too.

Whatever the case, if your home looks cluttered, maybe it’s simply that you’re not using your storage space to its full potential. Below, we’ve put together several organizational tips for four areas of the home that are usually cluttered and full of stuff.

1. THE BATHROOM

Small bathrooms can make it difficult to keep all your necessities handy and neat. Here’s what you can do. Install shelving and cabinetry to utilize the available wall space in the room. Be sure to place them far enough apart to accommodate tall bottles of shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and the like. If wall space is limited, look for skinny shelving units. Be sure to measure before you head out to shop. Utilize closets just outside the bathroom for things like towels, washcloths, etc. to free up shelf/cabinet space in the bathroom itself.

2. THE KITCHEN

A lot of activity happens in the kitchen, so be sure to use these organization tips to keep it tidy. Utilize empty corner space by placing special corner shelving units there. Add shelving to the ends or underneath a kitchen island to give you additional storage space. Purchase drawer organizers to help keep drawers neat, which gives you more space. Place the cooking tools you use regularly inside decorative canisters on the countertop.

3. CLOSETS

Even if you don’t have enough closets in your home, you can organize the ones you do have to get the most out of the space. Arrange your clothing according to type. When everything is organized this way, you get a clear picture of what you have, and it takes up less space than if it were all hung in there haphazardly. Install two hanging rods – one atop the other – to give yourself more space for hanging clothes. Leave room for longer garments to hang freely, while hanging two rows of short pieces. Buy cubbies to divide your closet into smaller sections as needed. These work well for things like folded clothes, towels, toiletries, etc. Utilize the inside of the closet door by installing hooks and door racks for things like handbags, scarves, and belts.

4. THE LAUNDRY ROOM

The laundry room is sometimes a “catch-all” for things, so figure out what goes in there and then do the following to keep it organized. Use shelving to keep things in their places. Whether it’s wall-mounted shelves or a shelving unit, be sure you’re using the available wall space to its full potential in this small room. Put up a hanging rod above the folding table for hanging clothes while you work.

Organizing your things helps maximize the space you have. The four rooms mentioned typically contain a lot of stuff, so use the tips outlined above to keep them neat and get the most out of the space you have.
