How To Get Rid Of That Pet Smell In Your House

HOW TO HAVE A FRESH SMELLING HOUSE WHEN YOU HAVE PETS

We love our pets, but unfortunately, with our pets come to a plethora of odors and stains that are hard to get rid of. Many of us just live with it as part of loving our furry friends. Fortunately, thanks to the tips below, it’s possible to get pet odors out of your house and keep it fresh smelling regardless of the size, number, or breed of your furry loved ones.

Keep Pet Hair To A Minimum

Where there is pet hair, there is pet odor. To keep pet smells to a minimum, keep pet hair to a minimum. Sweep your hard floors daily and mop at least once a week. Vacuum your carpeted floors, rugs, and furnishings regularly as well to remove excess pet hair.

Clean Your Carpets

Vacuuming your carpets may not be enough to completely remove pet odors. Applying a powdered cleaner such as baking soda can remove stubborn odors from the carpet. Simply sprinkle the baking soda over the carpet and let it sit for at least an hour. It will absorb any odors that linger in the fibers. After an hour, vacuum up the baking soda to reveal a freshness even your dogs will appreciate.

Spot Treat Stains Immediately

Urine stains on the carpet can harbor odors for a long time. If your pet urinates on the carpet, blot up as much of the moisture as possible and then use a carpet-safe cleaner to remove the stain and odor completely.

Wash The Dog Bedding

Your dog’s bed, pillows, and blankets are likely the smelliest items in your house. Wash them once a week to keep pet odors at bay.

Remove dog bed covers and toss them in the washer. Also, wash any pillows or blankets your dog uses as well. When drying, don’t forget to add a couple of scented dryer sheets for good measure.

Air Out The House

One of the most effective and cheapest ways to get rid of pet odors is to air out the house. On a warm day, open all the windows and doors to allow air to circulate throughout your house. Turn on ceiling fans or window fans to further move air around.

On days when temperatures don’t encourage opening the windows, use an air purifier inside your home to help remove odors in your space.

Groom Your Pet

Regular grooming is good for your pet and good for your home. It helps keep your pet healthy and your home smelling fresh. Bathe your pet once every three months and brush him regularly to keep dander and shedding under control in between. It’s also a good idea to brush your dog’s teeth at least once a week, too.

Invest In A Black Light

If, after all your efforts, a strong pet smell still lingers in your home, there are likely hidden stains somewhere. Use a black light to reveal them so you can clean them up. Urine or vomit stains will glow yellow or green under a black light, while many other liquids often glow white.

You don’t have to resign yourself to living with pet odors just because you have pets. Follow the tips above to remove the odorous smell your furry friends leave behind in your home.
